  Since 2018, Peter has had an ongoing full-time assignment at Scandinavia's largest cinema operator… (Filmstaden/Odeon Kino). Over the years, Peter has been involved in a large number of large and small projects, a selection of which is listed below, but also in the ongoing development and management of the customer's sales system.

  Filmstaden's first IT system was implemented in the mid-1980s and the organization has many years of experience in conducting business in an IT context.

  However, during Peter's years, a major rejuvenation work has been done and today all central parts of the system have been replaced with modern technologies and industry standards.

  Fully integrated CI/CD pipelines are used for the build and release process.

  Peter has been a central part in the development of the system to what it is today, and has either been responsible for, or part of the team for, all the implementations that make up the system to date.

  Peter has extensive experience and habit of working daily with Java-based systems in a clustered Docker environment and with applications built with modern industry standards such as Spring Boot, Jakarta EE and Quarkus.

  He is used to working with transaction-heavy backend systems with many external integrations and payment providers, which place high demands on robustness.

  Furthermore, Peter works on a daily basis with SaaS services provided by Azure. Among others, Service Bus, Azure AD, Cosmos DB, Azure Postgres DB, Azure Functions etc.

  In addition to this, he has expertise in various database systems such as DB2, Postgres and MySql.

  Peter also spends a lot of time maintaining his knowledge of the design principles that are prized by modern IT systems and takes ongoing courses to further his education.

  System Developer And Architect

  One of the biggest projects during Peter's time at Filmstaden/Odeon was Project Terminator.

  The… purpose of the project was to replace all parts of the client's total sales system that were still written in RPG code and whose origins dated back to the mid-1980s, with modern Java-based technology.

  Of all the RPG functionality that had been developed and managed over several decades, the part that handled sales accounting was the most complex and time-consuming to replace.

  Since Peter is not only a Java expert and specialist, but also possesses solid knowledge in accounting, he was given responsibility for designing and developing the replacement for this functionality.

  The solution needed to be able to handle, among other things:

  • accounting for all sales for five separate companies within the Odeon/Filmstaden group

  • operations spread across two countries (Sweden and Norway)

  • completely separate accounting requirements and charts of accounts for each company

  • different tax and VAT accounting rules in Sweden and Norway

  • a very large number of combination purchases consisting of products, payment methods, discounts, etc.

  • accrual and other accounting requirements

  • export of accounting data to five separate accounting systems, via several different file standards for accounting (e.g. SIE4)

  • performance, as thousands of purchase transactions need to be processed and posted daily

  To handle the large amount of input and output data, charts of accounts and tax rules, most of the accounting rules were implemented in the Kogito framework using DMN (Decision Model and Notation).

  With DMN, complex business logic can be modeled and defined graphically, based on input and output data, and then packaged as executable Java logic. A major advantage of this approach is that the business rules become readable and manageable even for non-developers, such as the finance department, who can then understand and verify the rules.

  The final solution was a strictly asynchronous, message-driven application that continuously posts every single sales transaction in real time for the five companies, using the DMN API.

  To ensure that the posting rules worked correctly for the countless variations of purchase combinations, great importance was placed on extensive and detailed test cases that covered all scenarios.

  Since correctness in posting is business-critical, the new solution was run in parallel with the old one for an extended period. The results from both systems were continuously compared until all differences were eliminated.

  System Developer And Architect

  Project Mavel involved developing a new solution for external sales of gift cards, one of the… client's most important business areas.

  Peter was responsible for designing and developing the solution, which included several integration points with external systems and stakeholders. The result was a new application based on the Quarkus platform, with Jakarta EE and JAX-RS as the technical foundation.

  Common JSON contracts for data exchange were developed in collaboration with other teams. Great emphasis was placed on securing the system that handles all communication, including through encrypted VPN technology over secure connections.

  Peter led both the design and development of the project.

  Peter has worked on the design and implementation of direct integration between Filmstaden's sales… system and two new external payment providers, Swish in Sweden, and Vipps for the Norwegian market. This is to offer customers these payment options in each country when purchasing.

  Peter has been involved from start to finish from the development of the solution to final implementation.

  The architecture for the integrations was rendered in a new application that follows a strict message-driven architecture and includes many asynchronous flows.

  System Developer and Solution Designer

  The Scheduling project's primary task was to replace the entire part of the system whose main task… is to manage the scheduling of performances at cinemas in the Swedish and Norwegian markets, as well as manage agreements with distributors and a whole host of business rules connected to cinema screenings in general.

  The extensive old system had its roots in the late 90s and some parts were written in Flash, which is no longer supported.

  Peter was very involved in designing and implementing large parts of the solution, as well as having a holistic perspective on the solution.

  In short, the decision was made to replace the old system with a new application based on the Open Liberty platform, with a frontend written in JSF.

  Since the application is central to Filmstaden's entire operations and handles large amounts of data, high demands were placed on everything from UX to user-friendliness, performance and resiliency.

  The application is also complex in the sense that it should be smart enough to optimize and automate much of the users' tasks, as well as be "self-installing".

  The product was designed to have a largely message-driven architecture (Azure Service Bus), and work with asynchronous communication to speed up processes against the rest of the system. Azure AD is also used for user management.

  After hard work, the project was launched in October 2022 and was a success for the customer.

  The "Pricing" project aimed to introduce support for significantly higher flexibility in the payment… system's discount and pricing strategies.

  The system should be able to offer the possibility of easily defining arbitrary and general discount types with individual business rules and restrictions linked to these, as well as support for external discounts through integrations with partner companies and personal discounts linked to members

  Peter was extensively involved in both the development of sub-solutions and implementation in all parts that the project affected.

  Specifically, the project meant that the entire old extensive discount system that was managed by an RPG interface was replaced with a completely new GUI application for the back office, based on the Open Liberty platform and PrimeFaces (JSF) and with user management in Azure AD.

  Large parts of the sales system's APIs were also redesigned from scratch to make it easier for the system's primary clients (Sales channels: Web, App, Ticket machine and Cash register).

  This also meant that the entire system could be optimized and that several other old applications became obsolete and could be shut down.

  In connection with this, a move of the applications' runtime also began, away from a classic standalone runtime, and into a clustered docker environment with docker swarm as the instrumentator. Where Peter's team also stands for the specifications of the clustered environment.

  The project was very successful and the customer is still very active in it today, and extremely satisfied with the implementation.

  In connection with new legal requirements in Norway, Odeon Kino A/S (whose IT system was… developed/managed by Filmstaden AB) needed to implement extensive new system support to be compatible with the Norwegian Tax Administration's (Norwegian Tax Administration's) requirement specification.

  In short, the requirements meant that every POS system in Norway had to be able to generate so-called X/Z reports (Financial documents on sales between different points in time) and that the system as a whole should be able to generate an audit file in the so-called saf-T format (Standard Audit File for Tax).

  This relatively large project was named NKL (Norwegian Cash Register Act) and involved the general design and implementation of:

  • New DB schemas for storing/reading extended sales data defined by the Norwegian Tax Administration
  • Comprehensive extended system support in Filmstaden's/Odeon's own developed POS solution system.

  • expanded auditing of the cashier's activities in the cash register system
  • Development of a new application for generating the audit file in the saf-T format, etc.

  Peter became responsible for the design and implementation of selected parts, including the application that would generate the new audit file (Spring Boot/Hibernate), but also worked with large parts of the implementation in the cash register system (Java Swing) and the DB model (DB2).

  The project was particularly challenging as the requirements from the authority were in many cases very unclear. Peter and the rest of the team had to work together to sort out many of these together with tax lawyers.

  The project was very successful in the end and the implementation is still in full use today.

  System developer

  At this time, the customer had recently changed ownership from the Bonier Group to the American AMC. In connection with this, a number of regulations were added under the concept of SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) that the customer needed to comply with.

  This placed new demands on, among other things, auditing functionality in SF Bio's existing IT system in order to have full traceability of how the affected systems were used by the users, according to the concept of "Who did it?", "What was done?", "From where?" and "When?".

  Peter became responsible for designing and implementing this functionality in the selected parts of the system that were affected, primarily those parts that relate to pricing or are of a monetary nature.

  The project included design and implementation of:

  • DB schemas
  • data storage/retrieval with SQL and ORM (Hibernate)
  • REST-ful web services (Spring Boot)
  • GUI functionality and (Angular-Dart)
  • automatic report generation of data to PDF format (Java).

  In addition to this, the customer would also change the name from "SF Bio AB" to the current "Filmstaden AB", an extensive job that required a detailed analysis of the entire system to identify the places where the old name was exposed.

  Peter was responsible for carrying out this analysis, developing an action plan and implementing it throughout the system.

  The system's task is to manage/automate scheduling of ship personnel and to present individual statistics and follow-up of worked OB hours/overtime hours taking into account union collective agreements for each employee. The system is used by ship and administrative personnel at a ferry company.
